As I was reading God’s Word I came across Romans 12:21 which states, “Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.” This scripture struck me deep because we are wondering how do we respond to the evilness in the world as well as in our own lives? How do we reconcile being persecuted but God says to love?
Paul is writing to the church giving them characteristics of how a Christian should act. He tells us that we should:
- Bless them that persecute you: bless, and curse not.
- Recompense to no man evil for evil
- Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves, but rather give place unto wrath: for it is written, Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Lord.
- And Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.
The word overcome in the original context means to be victorious; to win; to maintain one’s cause.
When we respond with love and good. We can be victorious over evil.
The civil rights movement sang the song, “We shall overcome…one day! Deep in my heart, I do believe. We shall overcome one day.”
I believe this. Not only with the fight of racial equality and morality, not only in my own person affairs, but in every aspect of the world. We shall overcome. With the Lord as our guide we don’t have to worry about overcoming in our own strength. But we can only overcome with his power and with his might and with his love.
If he can love me in my unloveable state. I can love others inspite of how they treat me. Do you believe that We Shall Overcome?
