Pay Attention to the Signs…

On Saturday as I traveled to Marlin, TX to speak I was following the directions of Google maps. The only problem was that when I reached Temple, TX the exit that I was supposed to take was no longer there. So, Google re-routed me and said the next exit I was supposed to take was Exit 315. As I was driving and getting closer to the exit I noticed a sign that said that Exit 315 was closed and to take Exit 314. Seems doable but there was a problem. When I saw the sign, I was too close to exit, going too fast to take the exit and I was in the wrong lane to take the exit. I saw the sign…but I was too late to do anything about it. So, I had to take another direction which added extra time to reach my journey.

How many of us on this journey of life have been traveling not paying attention to the signs? When we do see the sign, it is too late for us to do anything about it and we find ourselves having to take another route and causing our journey to be extended to our destination.

The sign that I noticed too late was not hidden. It was illuminated and in the right place, but the problem was, I wasn’t paying attention. I was focused on other things, talking on the phone and not giving my full attention to the road. In life, God tries to give us signs. He tries to warn us of some of the dangers in life and He tries to let us know that some of the decisions we want to make are not the decisions we should make. Too often we miss out on the right exit because we missed our opportunity being focused on other things.

Many people have confided in me that they made the wrong decisions in matters concerning life. For many of them, I have known their struggle and I saw the signs. I have given counsel that they should consider their decision and make sure that they are doing the right thing. Even in my own life, I have seen the signs but was not willing to adhere to the signs. Because of that I ended up on a path that I should not have been on and ended up spending extra time getting to where I needed to be.

God loves each of us and he has plans for each of our lives. Don’t be too focused on your own plans that you fail to see the signs that God is placing in your lives. Some of those signs could be to Stop, Yield, Make a U-Turn, Rough Road Ahead, Slippery Surface, Construction Ahead, Road Closed or Exit Closed. Whatever the signs may be please pay attention and be prepared to follow the signs in order that you will be on the right path.
