“Ratchet Arithmetic”

As I was preparing for bible study at noon…I was reading the chapter out of the book by A.W. Tozer entitled, “The Attributes of God”. The chapter is talking about the immensity of God. He asks the question, “Why are we not happy?” As Christians we should know that if God loves us then we should be happy. But he says that we make a mistake and our lives are set up as “Things plus God.”

We try to find happiness in things of this world and then add God to it. Truth be told that we should be happy with God and just God alone. Other “things” in our lives should give additional joy but should not be a part of the equation. Have you ever been down and depressed because “things” are not right in your life? You ever felt like you needed someone, something or some money to bring joy to your life? Why can’t God be ENOUGH?

Tozer quotes in his book, “And yet we’re not a happy people because we’ve got our minds set on things. We multiply things, and we increase things and we perfect things. We beautify things and put our confidence in things and God.” He then later states, “We multiply, we increase, and still we’re anxious and unsatisfied. Why? Because all that is beneath God will not satisfy us.”
I am learning to abstain and eliminate ratchet arithmetic from my life. Instead of “Things + God = Happiness”, I am learning new math that says, “God – Things = Happiness”. And if you eliminate the need of subtraction you can simplify the equation and say “God = Happiness.”

As long as I have God in my life I am satisfied and filled with joy because like the song says, “God is my Everything. He is my joy in sorrow. He is my Hope for tomorrow. He’s a rock in a weary land. A shelter in the time of storm. God is. God is. God is. God is…MY EVERYTHING!” Be blessed!
