As we celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr day, I was reminded of the song that said, “We Shall Overcome someday. Deep in my heart, I do believe, we shall overcome one day!” I thought to myself have we overcome or have we just come over.
The definition of “Overcome” means to prevail, to succeed in dealing with a problem or difficulty. The term “Come Over” means you temporarily go from one side to the other (point of view). Or to affect someone.
As I see it the dream that Dr. King affectionately had for us has not yet come to fruition. Yes we have had our first black president only to be ridiculed and made to seem that because of his presidency America was in the worse shape it has ever been in. Yes we have successful athletes but as we have found out that owners view them as somewhat slaves only that they can’t have a voice but to just do what they have been paid to do.
I don’t think we have Overcome. I don’t think we have prevailed or succeed in the problem of racism. I don’t believe that this world doesn’t view color but rather still has the hint of racism and bigotry in some hearts.
No, we haven’t overcome. We have just come over. We have come over to the other side of racism for a temporary while, until we have a President who is uncovering and reigniting in what we thought was buried but as we see is resurrecting from the dead. Dr. King and others in the Civil Rights movement fought and died for us to overcome and one day live in a country where the world sees people of all colors and ethnicity, not as something less but something GREAT.
Mr. President, if we want to make America Great again, first we need to find out when it was Great before. The closest to Greatness I can tell is when we experienced the first black president. It seemed as though America was headed to Greatness. But the sad reality is that we have just come over temporarily…and now it seems we are back to the other side!
